This post is talking about a certain industry and how computers effect it. I choose retail, since I work in retail, specifically Wally world (Wal-Mart). Why it is important and explain why employees should not be computer illiterate.
I work at Wal-Mart and my job is reliant on a phone to get stuff done. Wal-Mart gives every employee a phone that has been outfitted to be all we need to get our job done. That comes with changing prices, marking out product, and assigning where things go. There is more to this that supervisors and above have to do with actual computers in the backroom. It is impossible for us to work with out any form of computer, because our cashiers use computers to cash out customers along with returns. Every part of Wal-Mart has information technology involved in it, from simple things like the digital scales in produce and deli. To the paint counter computer for getting exactly the right paint for someone. Two weeks ago we had issues with our system and we lost our Wi-Fi in the store, it made it so we could not stay open. The cash registers would not work because of the system and Wi-Fi being down, ODP (online, delivery, pickup) team could not do most of their job because of the same reason, we had to get people out of the store because without Wi-Fi we were unable to function. I couldn't believe how one simple thing could cause so much damage to our sales and how fragile everything was.
Now for any of us to do our jobs we need to know how to work a cell-phone and have a basic understanding of computer literacy, because if we do not it becomes very difficult to do even the simplistic things. I know this from experience I had to train someone that had never used a cellphone before so learning about touch screens how to navigate the phone and more took a while. So having even a little information into the world of technology is super useful. When looking into the future I know Walmart will be doing more with robotics they have to. We have a machine that is programmed to clean the floors in specific areas everyday by maintenance. The impact will be staying with what works best they will do there best to assess the current trends and adapt from there. I am always wondering what they will do next. But it will be good for them in the end.
